Attention all feline lovers! June is National Cat Adoption Month and what better way to celebrate than to find the purrfect new mate to welcome into your home? Here are some of the shelters located in Central Florida that may have your next furry friend!

The Cat Protection Society

This no-kill shelter is located in Eustis, Florida and is open Monday through Saturday 11 AM – 2 PM. Established in 1997, this group was initially known as the Lake County Humane Society but soon outgrew their initial location and moved to seven acres out in Eustis. They have a large enclosed building that’s attached to two other “open-air pavilions” where cats roam around almost as if they were outdoors. Kittens, young adult cats, and those less-fortunate felines that are not in tip-top medical condition are all kept in separate locations tailored to their specific needs. The website is user-friendly and even offers a virtual tour of their facility. The facility currently has about 400 cats who need homes.

Adopt a Pet

This particular website requires a few steps before looking at the cats available for adoption. First, you must select the “cats” tab. Then, enter your location by either zip code or city, state. You’re able to condense your search by entering the following specifics: breed, sex, distance, age, color and hair. There’s also another search option: Shelters/Rescues. This tab allows you to search for cats to adopt by finding local shelters or rescue centers. This website is not run by a particular group or shelter but rather by Purina. The search results will show up as a webpage full of smaller pictures of the available cats. To view the individual cat’s full profile (age, sex, demeanor, biography, location and contact information), you just click on their image.

Candy’s Cats

Candy’s Cats is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that has been around since 2005. They come to two PetSmart store locations (located in Altamonte Springs and Winter Garden) on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM – 4PM. They ask that you please call beforehand and set up an appointment. This non-profit has an online application for adoption available on their website. Candy’s Cats is a no-kill organization that focuses on making sure that all the cats they have are treated medically, microchipped, spayed/neutered, are tested and vaccinated prior to being adopted out.

Pet Alliance, Orlando

Pet Alliance runs Monday through Saturday 10 AM – 7 PM and Sunday 12 PM – 4 PM. When you follow the link given for this website, you are given a choice between “Adopt a Dog” and “Adopt a Cat.” Once you have clicked on “Adopt a Cat” you are then able to view a webpage that displays small photographs of available cats with their name, gender, breed and age posted below. To view the cat’s full profile, you just click on their image. There’s an online application for adoption that is available online via their website. The cats receive medical care such as vaccinations, testing for feline leukemia, and are spayed/neutered before being adopted out.
