Longwood has a rich history dating back to the earliest settlers, the Seminole Indians. In 1873, Edward Hench homesteaded a tract in the area and named in “Longwood”. He was the first mayor and cofounded the South Florida Railroad connecting Sanford and Orlando.

Today, Longwood is a modern place, home to several exclusive country club communities, mixed-use retail/ residential areas, historic places and at least 10 golf courses within 15 miles of the City! Longwood’s Historic District encompasses roughly 190 acres and has 37 contributing structures. It became part of the National Register of Historic Places in October 1990.
